Short description:*************** HOSTING ORGANISATION ENVIRONMENT
***************
The children living in Casa da Encosta suffered maltreatments like:
- Negligence (ex: failure on providence of food, clothing, shelter,
medical, hygiene and supervision needs, etc,);
- physical abuses (ex: beating)
- emotional abuses (ex: intimidating, ignore to give attention, abandon,
etc.);
- sexual abuses (ex: molestation, pornography, etc.) ;
- moral-legal/educational maltreatments (ex: force child labour, begging on
streets, etc.);
- drug/alcohol addiction (high consume of parents, etc.)
In general, these dangerous situations can be identified by local
authorities (ex: Police, School, Hospital, Social Care services) or by
local population (ex: family, neighbours, friends) through a process of
registered reporting containing important information about the child, the
offender and the description of the facts. The report can be anonymous and
according to the severity and regularity of the danger, the local
authorities are called to intervene.
When the danger is high and there aren’t other family members available to
host the child, the moving to a foster home is done and after their future
is evaluated, according to the following behaviours of the parents and
parental competences acquired.
So, besides the mission of overall protection and provision of care, the
priority of the foster homes is also to evaluate the profile of the
biological family in order to understand if the conditions are met to make
possible the return of the child. This progress can be reached by the early
intervention that is taken from the beginning by the staff of the foster
home with these families.
In this way, some children of the foster home have contacts with family
mainly on weekends or holidays, but some other don’t have any kind of
contact with their family.
When there are no conditions for the return to the biological family, the
children are identified for adoption or live longer in a foster home until
adulthood, which assures the quality and their individual accompaniment.
The children have a normal routine life: go to the school, have
extra-school activities, have friends, but instead of living with their
family, they live together in a house. Generally, these children have some
development problems in some fields as verbal communication, establishment
of social relationships, internalization of rules and school performance.
So, in these situations all availability of professional staff is needed to
follow children evolution: psychiatrists, teachers, educators, doctors, etc.
******************** LOCAL COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENT ****************

especially during Summer time. It’s also possible to find immigrant people:
Brazil, China, East Europe and Roma community but mostly immigrants of
Portuguese-Speaking African Countries.
The region of Lisbon has one of the most pleasant weather of Europe with a
temperate continental climate:
- Spring: fresh and warm (8ºC to 26 ºC)
- Summer: hot and dry but when we get closer to the sea the weather becomes
fresher (16 ºC to 35 ºC)
- Autumn: unstable between sunny and cloudy days and some rain (12 ºC to 27
ºC)
- Winter: pleasant temperatures with high level of rain (3ºC to 17 ºC)
The sea temperature varies from 15ºC to 21º C according to the season of
the year. Due to the proximity to the sea the region of Lisbon is also
windy which create the perfect conditions for the practice of some sports
like: windsurf, bodyboard, surf and sailing. Although, due to the climate
changes of the past years, the weather is becoming unpredictable and the
duration of the seasons can vary as well as lower and higher temperatures
can occur.

Profile:**************** PROFILE OF THE VOLUNTEERS **********************
In general, the profile of the volunteers must be very human,
self-motivated, creative, open minded, tolerant with self-initiative,
willing to take on new challenges, very flexible and ready to help in
different tasks, with good adaption to different realities and ready to
live with different conditions and environments they are used to in their
original country.
The volunteers must be highly motivated to work with children with a
difficult past and social background. Is expected the volunteers have a
positive attitude, patience and good listening capacity.
A basic knowledge of Portuguese, some previous experience with children and
special interest on music, dance, theatre, sports, can be an added value,
in order to facilitate the relationship with the children and help the
volunteers to accomplish their tasks.
Before the project starts, the volunteers are recommended to get in direct
contact with children with similar background in their home country, in
order to be more aware of their needs and understand the environment of a
foster environment, etc.
During this time, the volunteers can try to implement some activities as a
previous test in order to better prepare themselves and learn by doing.*
Tasks:***************PROPOSED ACTIVITIES FOR EVS
volunteers:***********************
The learning opportunities described below are only suggestions based on
previous experiences of EVS volunteers. Therefore the learning process is
individual and might vary according to the profile of the volunteer
(motivation, skills and interest) and the sort of tasks developed. In any
case, a regular reflection about the learning results is recommended.
1.Communication in the mother tongue:
2. Communication in foreign languages:
3. Mathematical competence and basic competences in science and technology
4. Digital Competence
5. Learning to Learn
6. Social and civic competence
7. Sense of Initiative and Entrepreneurship
8. Cultural Awareness and Expression
*********WHAT WILL BE THE ROLE OF EVS VOLUNTEERS IN THE HOST
ORGANISATION,*********
The role of the EVS volunteers will be mainly to help the team of the
hosting organisation to create a home and safe environment, where the
children feel protected and live in a healthy way. Therefore, the
volunteers have to give a lot of care and transmit a feeling of confidence
in their relation with the children.
This can be achieved by creating a good relationship with the children and
earning their trust. Sometimes the children might show verbal or physic
aggressive attitudes towards adults around them and have to be comprehended
and at the same time everybody have to teach them rules, so they can learn
values of respect, love, tolerance, etc.
Is expected the volunteers get to know all the children’s daily routine:
wake up, going to school, lunch time, but mostly back from school, playing
time, dinner time, go to sleep and also during sleeping time, so sometimes
work in shifts can occur. Is also expected the volunteers help in different
fields of the working of the foster home: play with the children, feeding
them, bring/take them to/from school, organize the house, etc.
If the children speak about their bad life experiences, is expected the
volunteers make them understand they are in a safe environment, but mostly
show a positive attitude and don’t encourage them to continue speaking,
because this must be done by the expert staff. All small details about the
children are important to be shared with the team of the hosting
organisation and the volunteers will be asked to register this information
in a diary.
The volunteers have to respect the children’s past and cannot share the
information with outsiders, in order to protect their privacy. An
authorisation must be requested in case of taking pictures to the children
and is completely forbidden to share them in social networks (ex:
Facebook), media (ex: magazines, newspapers), etc.
The presence of the EVS volunteers helps the children to open their
horizons and be tolerant, by contacting with people from other countries
with different cultural models and language. Therefore, in a daily basis
the volunteers can motivate the children to discover special interests and
help them to be more autonomous.
The volunteers’ role can be performed by assisting the team of the foster
and there is also the chance for the volunteers to help ProAtlântico -
Associação Juvenil (coordinating organisation) to promote Youth in Action
programme in school, universities and public places.
When possible, the volunteers and the staff will plan together the
activities to be carried out, unless the plan is already defined and cannot
be changed and in this case the volunteer will help the team to perform it.
In other cases, some activities will be introduced by the volunteer taking
into account factors such as the characteristics of the volunteer, the
previous professional training and the personal preferences and also the
organisation aims and needs.
Along the project the level of responsibility of the volunteers can vary,
so it’s important is that volunteers and staff find an agreement on this
point so everybody feels comfortable.
We also want to give the volunteers the chance to experience the Portuguese
way of life and culture to feel integrated and understand better the
environment around.
- the activities in which the volunteers could be involved and the
activities the volunteers could create in your organisation. Please give
examples of typical activities for the volunteers.
According to the profile of the volunteer and the needs of the hosting
organisation, the volunteer will develop a range of tasks, that will be
defined after an integration process of the volunteer and knowing the
objectives and working methods of the organisation, that usually occurs
during the first month after volunteer’s arrival.
Below are proposals of activities that have to be adapted according to each
volunteer profile.
1. Leisure time (afternoon/evening and/or weekends)
- animate and implement leisure time activities for the children, with an
entertaining but also educational purpose (ex: watching movies, play songs,
storytelling, dance, theatre, etc.)
o accompany children in outside activities of the foster home (ex: go to
the doctor, take children to/from school/playground/cultural places, etc.)
2. Holidays (Christmas, Carnival, Easter, Summer) and Special Events
- propose and implement specific activities related to the period of the
holidays (ex: Christmas theatre play, build Carnival masks, games with
Easter eggs, Summer camps, etc.)
- help to prepare the Christmas party (ex: decoration, presents, etc.) and
children birthday parties
3. Meals Time
- Help to give the meals to the babies and small children
- Create a friendly and family environment and establish healthy
conversations
4. Organisation of offers and house:
- Separate and organise the offers from the local community like clothes,
shoes, toys, etc.
- Organise the house like folding clothes, put the clothes in the children
closets, and arrange the room.
5. Divulgation of Youth in Action Programme (in schools, Universities,
youth clubs, youth events, etc.) with ProAtlântico - Associação Juvenil
- Organisation of exhibitions, presentations and conversations with
Portuguese young people or future EVS volunteers to motivate young people
to be more active or give visibility to their EVS project;
- Inform young people about the EVS experience as a volunteer in Portugal
and also provide information about some aspects of the volunteer’ country
(ex: culture, language, cultural places, etc.);
The volunteers will have the possibility to propose and implement new
activities, but must be discussed in advance with the hosting organisation
team.
The foster home has strict rules about the kind of tasks performed by
volunteers. So, when apply to this project, the volunteers must be aware
that some tasks cannot be performed by them, only by the workers or it’s
possible only after knowing better the volunteer. Anyway, when the
volunteers apply to this project, must inform in advance which tasks have
more motivation.
*
Conditions:****************** FOOD AND ACCOMMODATION*********************
ProAtlântico - Associação Juvenil will act as coordinating organisation and
will provide € 150,00 to cover costs of food and extra expenses (ex:
cleaning materials, …) during non-working time. The food allowance is paid
in the beginning of each month. The volunteer can use the food money as
wished (ex: to buy own food, cook in the apartment, eat in a restaurant,
etc.).
The hosting organisation provides food during working time (ex: lunch,
dinner) or money to cover these expenses, according to the organisation
possibilities and facilities.
ProAtlântico provides lodging in an apartment, double or triple bedroom
with fully equipped kitchen, toilet, laundry facilities and living room.
The costs with electricity, water, gas, TV and Internet are covered by the
Coordinating Organisation. The Coordinating Organisation will provide
towels and bed clothes for the entire period of the project.
The apartment usually hosts local volunteers, Erasmus/Leonardo da Vinci
students, etc. The volunteer will share the room with another person from
the same gender. If needed, the coordinating organization might have to
change the volunteers from their rooms in order to accommodate new
volunteers.
